North Carolina Mountains-to-Sea Trail Segment 6
Great section of hiking saw us getting to E.B. Jeffress Park early in the morning on September 17. As we exited Hwy. 421 onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, heavy snow blasted us on a clear-visibility morning. Then, as we got onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, we were greeted with thick-as-pea-soup FOG! Couldn’t-see-5-feet-in-front-of-you fog, I’m sayin’! Had to creep along at a snails pace to make sure we didn’t drive off the side of a BRP cliff. Also was looking for the sign to Cascades Recreation Area. After a nerve-wracking drive there, was a relief to get out of the car alive! See my pic below when I got out of my car in the dark, and you can see how stressed I was on my face! That’s a thankful to be alive look!
Got the other car to Raven Rock, with considerable less fog, thankfully, and started the 20-mile hike back to Jeffress Park.
Was a great and memorable day. This area, coming out of the mountains toward the Piedmont was great. It is nice to not have to drive as far for some mountain and Blue Ridge Parkway day-trip hiking.
